At the beginning of my more in-depth self-development journey a few years ago, I decided to put together what I called a “self-care box”. It was a splurge of some of my favorite things that brought me joy and peace. When I was in a spiral, at wits-end, this is what I turned to. It was my way of distracting myself from my own toxic thoughts and treating myself with a little self-care.

This is a tool that I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone, really. In our fast-paced world, many of us struggle to stop and take time for ourselves. Indulging in a little self-care regularly prevents burnout and encourages healthy habits.

First, you’ll need a box. I decided to go purchase a beautiful photo box for mine because I wanted everything about it to be special. Your box can be whatever you desire! Below are a few ideas to get you inspired.

After you find your box, you get the joy of filling it! This post is filled with 12 ideas of what to add to your self-care box, but these are just ideas to get you started. Fill your box with whatever brings YOU joy and create a sense of calm for YOU.

12.Letter of Encouragement

This last one is going to take a little bit of effort on your part. When you are having a really great day, consider writing a letter to yourself reminding yourself of how far you’ve come and how much you have to live for.

You can run in several different directions with this. Maybe you want to remind yourself of the goals and dreams you have and inspire yourself to keep going. Maybe you need to remind yourself of your painful past and how far you have grown since then. Or maybe you just want to write down some of your favorite quotes or Bible verses to encourage you. Whatever you know YOU need to hear when you are in a dark place.

I also want to encourage you to have your “safety plan” handy. I would not recommend putting it in your box, but plastering it on your wall or on your fridge where you see it often. (You could also make a copy to have in your box if you like.) If you ever do not feel safe alone practicing self-care with the items in your box, reach out to your people or seek professional help. I would love to connect with you and encourage you, but please know that I am not a professional and my advice is based solely on my research and personal experiences.

There are so many other things you could put in your self-care box, but I hope this gives you a good start. What did you put in your self-care box? I’d love to hear from you, and I know others would love more ideas! Leave us a comment and let us know!
